“It’s like, if I had been born 10 years later, I could have saved thousands of dollars and a ton of time.” Andrew Burgess, on collecting records before the creation of Spotify.

Preservation

  • lambo91: What are your thoughts on cryogenic preservation and the idea of medically treating aging?
  • neiltyson: A marvelous way to just convince people to give you money. Offer to freeze them for later. I'd have more confidence if we had previously managed to pull this off with other mammals. Until then I see it as a waste of money. I'd rather enjoy the money, and then be buried, offering my body back to the flora and fauna of which I have dined my whole life.

Learning

  • bearsfan043: What is the simplest thing in your life that makes you happy?
  • neiltyson: Watching a person learn something new - not simply a new fact (those are cheap and easy) -- but achieve a new understanding for how the world works. That's the only reward a (true) educator ever seeks.

Relativity

  • bluengreen7: What are your thoughts on the reports of neutrinos traveling faster than the speed of light?
  • neiltyson: Three options:
  • 1) Mistake in the data
  • VERY DISTANT 2) New particle traveling backwards through time. No need to modify relativity.
  • EVEN MORE DISTANT 3) Need to modify Relativity.
  • Roastmasters: Upvote for implying that time travel is more possible than the infactuality of relativity.

“‘Nothing is more rare in any man,’ says Emerson, ‘than an act of his own.’ It is quite true. Most people are other people. Their thoughts are someone else’s opinions, their life a mimicry, their passions a quotation.” Oscar Wilde, De Profundis (the Emerson quote is from a lecture entitled “The Preacher”)

“But the arrival of digital projection will trigger the final capitulation of the two last holdouts of film’s 19th-century, analog-mechanical legacy. Projection, at the end of the line, is one; the other is the original photography that begins the whole process. The movie industry is currently a digital sandwich between slices of analog bread.”

“Acceptance is a lot more important than happiness, I think,” he explains. “Happiness, there’s no consensus on what it even means, so I’ve always found it a little difficult to deal with when people ask you if you’re a happy person or people seem to think—I don’t think they really believe this, but people seem to think that there is some big happiness, or someone, or some piece of music even or art, like, ‘Is that sad? Is that happy?’ and it’s like, I don’t really get that. I don’t understand that, to be honest. I’ve always felt bad that people ask me if I’m a happy person and I really don’t—they don’t want you to say no, you know?” He laughs.”

“E qual è quei che volontieri acquista
e giugne ‘l tempo che perder lo face
che ‘n tutti suoi pensier piange e s’attrista”
‘We all so willingly record our gains, / until the hour that leads us into loss. / Then every single thought is tears and sadness.’ —Dante, Inferno
